Motown Masala

March 28 @ 12:00 pm May 9 @ 8:00 pm EDT

This exhibition celebrates the spirit of resourcefulness and resilience embedded in Detroit’s material culture. Through the lenses of makers, modifiers, and menders, this exhibition explores how urban communities creatively navigate scarcity, challenge consumerism, and reimagine infrastructure. From tinkering and hacking to jugaad, we highlight the artistry and ingenuity of transforming locally available resources into solutions—blending survival with pleasure, necessity with invention.
Join us in a dialogue that bridges Detroit’s grassroots innovation with global practices of making-do, celebrating the unsung heroes who redefine what it means to design, repair, and thrive in an ever-changing world. Together, communal design, and the globalization of ingenuity shape our collective future

Activate the American RIAD

February 24 @ 3:00 pm 5:00 pm EST

What We Know About the RIAD’s Capacity:

  • Access to electrical outlets and a community oven
  • Beautiful and adaptable event space
  • No current public facilities (bathrooms/restrooms)
  • No community/public kitchen for food catering (Prep, Use, Sanitation)
  • No clear boundaries for controlling access during entrepreneurial events

Governing Access for Community-Led Activation:

To truly make this space a community-led asset, we must collectively define what access and governance looks like. This includes:

  • Identifying the resources and infrastructure needed to support inclusive community events.
  • Establishing clear guidelines for space usage that empower local entrepreneurs and creatives.
  • Creating a transparent and equitable system for reserving and managing event dates.
  • Ensuring the space remains a safe and welcoming environment for all.

Your voice and vision are essential in shaping how this space can best serve our community. By working together, we can design a model of governance that reflects our values of collaboration, creativity, and community empowerment.

How To Participate:

You are invited to get involved in one of two ways:

  1. Join the Planning Meeting – Monday, February 24th at 3:30 PM
    • Participate in the conversation about activating the space and governing access.
  2. Share Your Ideas and Input – If you cannot attend, please send me your thoughts on:
    • How we can activate the space effectively
    • Potential dates you would like to use the space
    • Essential needs to accommodate your community event idea
    • What governance structures would support equitable access and community leadership

Why Get Involved?

While there is no funding in place to compensate artists or event coordinators at this time, this is an amazing opportunity to utilize a free, dynamic space to bring your creative ideas, planned projects, or social enterprising concepts to life. Additionally, I am actively seeking funds to transform this initiative into a job creation and local entrepreneur compensation mechanism.

Call to Action:

Please confirm your participation or share your ideas by 10:00 AM on Monday, February 24th. This will allow me to prepare a narrative to present our collective vision for activating this space and governing its use as a true community-led asset.

I look forward to your response and am excited about the possibilities we can create together!

Review of Grape-vine.io -2/22

The good news:

  • We were visited by members of the North End’s EII (Equitable Internet Initiative) who came to learn about assembling and deploying the Portable Network Kits
  • Good food was provided by Yum Village and a pizza joint
  • Onyx got the RPI cameras and personal network’s captive portal working
  • Gabby will be curating the next event

The usual news

  • We weren’t prepared to share what we’ve been learning
  • Turnout was low
  • We’ve consistently displayed high expectations and low standards
